More than 85 years ago

the brothers Lay opened their small spice mill. Who would have thought in those days that the 2 manned company would become one of the most highly acclaimed companies in Germany. 80 employees, customers worldwide and a production of more than 3000 tons of spices, spice mixtures, marinades and additives, this speaks for itself but the company’s success doesn’t stop there.

After 85 years, we still have the same aim. To ensure our customers success now and in the future through quality, innovative products and an optimal customer support service.

1920 Foundation of the “Conservierungssalz-Fabrik Gewürzmühle A. & F. Lay”.

With only a 2 man personnel, the young enterprisers August and Friedrich Lay imported seasonings and produced preservatives, nitrite curing salts and their first mix of seasonings in the so called “Lindesmühle”.

1928 Renaming the enterprise as “Conservierungssalz-Fabrik Gewürzmühle Gebrüder Lay”.

Thanks to the addition of the 2 younger brothers Karl and Herman, the company was strengthened and received a new name, one which remained synonymous with the best seasonings and spice products from Bad Kissingen.

1960 New building.

The continuous success and growing need for more production capacity led to an extension of the enterprise and a high tech building.

1965 The next generation

A new era began as Heinz and Dr. Bernhard Lay took management of the company. It was their job to expand globalisation and deliver the next step of success in the history of Lay Gewürze.

1980 Full steam ahead.

Still on its way up, the company makes yet another expansion to the building to cope with demands as well as undergoing a structural change in management.

1989 In best company.

Lay became a Ltd company and with it started a new era in its history. From now on, Karl-Heinz Dittmer was to run the Lay Gewürze as the Managing Director.

1996 Innovation of a different kind:

Seasoning oils. The introduction of marinol seasoning oils with floating herbs and spices was to mark an innovation milestone in product development. In the mean time 40 different seasoning and tastes guarantee a perfect culinary result and therewith a directional company success.
